Q&A with Greg King, Director of Golf

Most challenging hole at Mirimichi?

16. This hole challenges the player with stunning visuals that make the hole seem narrower than it plays. A long second shot will test the finest ball striker, and a par here is a great score.

Favorite hole at Mirimichi?

8. This long par three features a large green that literally hangs out into the water on the left. This hole can, at times, be very intimidating, and will force all golfers to trust their swing to play it well.

Why did you move to Mirimichi and what is unique about this course?

Easy. This is a fabulous opportunity to be involved with the greatest ownership group, period. When you add state of the art eco-friendly, pioneer environmental studies, Audubon sanctuary, LEED platinum clubhouse, and, above all, a “world class facility,” it is a can't miss opportunity!

How does this golf course compare to other courses you have worked at?

This course will rival any and is in a peer group of the finest in the world.

The inaugural Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open was held Oct. 13 -19, 2008, at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. As part of his involvement, Timberlake played in the celebrity pro-am and hosted a concert during tournament week. Timberlake helped oversee several changes to the tournament to make it more pro and celebrity friendly. Changes included moving it to just one course to make it easier for pros to prepare for the tournament and involving notable celebrities in just the Wednesday pro-am.

He ultimately hopes to attract some of the biggest names in professional golf to play in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.Timberlake has agreed to be the tournament host for five years. The tournament benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children, a one-of-a-kind international health care system of 22 hospitals dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing pediatric specialty care, innovative medical research and outstanding teaching programs. Q&A with Justin Timberlake

Why did you decide to get involved with Mirimichi?

“When I was 10 years old I learned to play golf at Big Creek Golf Course. When I heard that the golf course was up for auction, I wanted to step in and save the golf course from potential development. My family and I want the redesigned and rebranded course to be a place that everyone can enjoy and where we can grow the game of golf.”

What are some of the environmental features that make Mirimichi unique / why was this important to you?

As part of the renovation of the course, I started asking questions about whether you can turn a golf course into an eco-friendly place. It turns out you can. The clubhouse will be Platinum LEED certified when it is complete and that is an extremely grueling process but very rewarding. While we have several initiatives that make Mirimichi eco-friendly, one of the greatest in my opinion is that while we use 80 percent of the energy we produce, we return 20 percent to the Tennessee Energy Grid.

What does Mirimichi mean to you?

Some of my heritage is Native American. I thought it would be fitting with all of the eco-friendly features of the course to find a name that reflected that heritage. I have been told that Mirimichi means, 'place of happy retreat,' and that is what the experience at this golf course is all about — a place to enjoy time with family and friends.
